Frequently Asked Questions

Emotional Intelligence is the ability to understand and skillfully navigate emotions and relationships, to paraphrase Daniel Goleman, author of the book 'Emotional Intelligence'. To me, the heart of EQ is understanding the real reason for your feelings and actions, as well as the one pattern of thought that causes most conflict. EQ is widely considered to be the most important skill for everything from personal health and well-being to the quality of your relationships to professional success.

This is for you if you're dealing with any kind of social or emotional problem: negative self-talk, low self-esteem, mental health struggles, difficulty in relationships, family conflicts, bullying at school (or anywhere else) or conflict and violence in your community. It's for anyone who works in a listening profession: counseling and therapy, conflict mediation, crisis intervention, violence reduction, or anyone who generally wants less suffering and more peace, both with others and within themselves. It’s for people who know it’s up to them and are willing to 'be the change' they want to see in themselves, their relationships, and the world around them.

Mainly, access to 28 hours per month of weekend workshops, which are 3.5-hour facilitated practice sessions where you can practice one on one with other people using your own and others’ real situations. This is by far the best and fastest way to learn and integrate this practice. You'll also have access to recordings of past workshops.

I have over 100 hours of certified training and a bachelors degree in applied Emotional Intelligence. However, most of what I know I've learned from my 15+ years of working directly with people of all ages and in all kinds of challenging situations, including in schools, prisons, youth groups, businesses, families and couples, as well as 1:1 work with individuals.

No, I do not think of it that way or call it by that name, and I am not a certified NVC trainer. However, the work that I do is based on many of the same concepts and intentions, and I did first learn about these things when I read the book ‘Nonviolent Communication’ by Marshall Rosenberg.

That totally depends on how much you put into it! Even a little exposure to this practice can have a profound effect, but it does take time and repetition for the skills to become second nature. Most of it rests on your willingness and effort to adopt the consciousness behind the skills.

We start by checking in with everyone on the call, then I answer any questions before breaking into small groups for one-on-one practice. I move around between the breakout rooms to offer coaching and answer questions, or simply to model the skills.

No. I review the basic principles at the beginning of each session if anyone requests that, but you will pick up a lot just by listening and observing the process—and even more by participating. You can also learn a lot from the materials on the resources page, some of which are useful in the practice sessions anyway.

No. Therapy serves specific purposes that you will not find here. I do not diagnose mental disorders or illnesses, and I do not give therapeutic advice. I do, however, help people to effectively and efficiently process their emotions and experiences through greater awareness of their feelings, needs, language and self-communication. This often has an effect that some have described as "therapeutic"; some of my students have said things like, "I got more out of your eight week course than I got in two years of talk therapy". This is NOT therapy, but it often serves many of the same purposes.

Yes, I do offer a refund on your first month of membership if we can't resolve the reasons why you want one.
